This year’s Fountainhead Half Marathon and 10K trail running race is planned to be a hybrid event…meaning we will have both an in-person event and a virtual event.  The in-person race is scheduled for Saturday September 26, 2020 and Sunday September 27, 2020, and the virtual race occurs any time between September 19, 2020 and October 4, 2020.

The in-person race has a cap of 150 runners each day (Saturday and Sunday) and the virtual event has a cap of 100.

The virtual event allows you flexibility on when and where to run the race.  You can run any time between September 19, 2020 and October 4, 2020.  You can run the virtual race at a park near your home, on a treadmill, or even at Fountainhead Park itself…just NOT on the race mornings PLEASE!!  The course will remain marked on Monday September 27th if you want to run the actual marked course for your virtual race.

Fountainhead Course Descriptions

Fountainhead Regional Park is situated along the banks of the Occoquan Reservoir in Western Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. The 10K and half marathon race courses are beautiful and challenging consisting mostly of hiking trails (including the Bull Run Occoquan Trail), horse trails, and old dirt roads. This course is epic! Competitors will run over rocks and roots, through several shallow streams, and up (and down) some quad burning hills.

Course Length: 13ish Miles OR 10Kish (~6.6 miles)

Summary of COVID Precautions

The safety and health of all racers and volunteers are of upmost importance.  While all risk cannot be eliminated, the in-person race will have the following mitigations in place.

  • Start times will be staggered from 7am to 9am both Saturday and Sunday.
  • Each runner will have a specific 15 minute start window and 30 minute start window. For example, the first check-in window is 7am to 7:15am and the first start window is 7am to 7:30am. You will have an opportunity to select your start window, but EX2 reserves the right to reassign you if needed.
  • Each check-in group will be 25 people.
  • Groups 10 people (max) will start every 5 minutes. Smaller groups will start if there is not a queue.
  • Check-in is touchless and event will be chip timed.
  • It is expected that each runner arrives and proceeds to check-in ready to run. Portajohns will be available in the start queue while the runner is getting ready to start. We do not want people checking in and going back to your car.
  • Race giveaways (T-shirt and medal) and post-race food and water are grab and go only and pre-packaged. We will have breakfast burritos, but the selection of food will be MUCH smaller than normal.
  • Parking, check-in, start, and finish areas of the event will have ample room for social distancing.
  • Signage will be used to remind people to wear their face coverings and stay socially distanced at all times.
  • Face coverings are required at all times when in check-in, starting, and finish areas.
  • Runners must carry a face covering during event (when running) and use when passing if ample distance is not available on the trail. If a racer doesn’t have a face covering, then one will be provided to them during check-in.
  • Aid stations are staffed for safety only – no water will be provided with the exception of one water refill station at about the halfway point on the half marathon course. Athletes are required to carry their own hydration.
  • There is no post-race awards ceremony.
  • Runners are not allowed to stay after the race except to cool down.
  • Spectators are not allowed. Strictly enforced.
  • Ample restrooms (portajohns and park bathrooms) are available to minimize queues. All restrooms will be sanitized once every 2 hours by EX2 staff.
  • Hand sanitizer stations available at check-in, start, and finish.
  • All racers will be required to self-validate that they do not have COVID symptoms or have been exposed to anyone suspected to have COVID for the 14 days leading up to event.
