- What should I wear? What should I bring?
To be prepared, it is very important that our volunteers plan for the weather and the amount of time they will be outside at a race event. Here is a list of items that volunteers typically bring.
- Water bottle
- Sunscreen
- Layers of clothing
- Close-Toed shoes (always a good idea, even on those hot days.)
- Snack (While we provide food for our volunteers, it is also typical that the time that volunteers are able to eat is not easily predicted. Having something simple is a good idea).
- Rain jacket
- Small backpack for above items
- Can I bring my pet?
To provide the maximum level of safety for your pet, racers, volunteers, and spectators, we ask that you please leave your pet at home. Thank you.
- Can I bring my child?
Yes, but you will be solely responsible for the supervision of your child. We welcome volunteers of all ages and just ask that a Volunteer Information Form be filled out for everyone so that we can place volunteers in suitable posts.
- How do I get credit for volunteering to apply to a future race?
When you check-in on the day of the race, we will give you a discount coupon worth $15 off a future race or $5 off EX2 merchandise. We hand these out on race days only. You can redeem these coupons when registering for an event through the US mail. Simply print out the registration form for that race and send in with your discount coupon and a check minus $15 off the registration fee.
- Can I give my race credit to someone else?
No. Your earned credits are for your own personal use and cannot be transferred. For those volunteers that do not race, you have the option of using your discount coupon and take $5 off any EX2 merchandise.
- Will there be restroom facilities near my volunteer post?
All volunteer posts are typically within walking distance of restroom facilities. If your post is more isolated, you will have the opportunity to use the restroom before you leave the check-in area.
- Should I/can I bring my bike/kayak/other recreational equipment?
We don’t require volunteers to bring any special equipment. However, if you have a bike/kayak/other special gear and are willing to use them in volunteer duties, let us know when you sign up to volunteer – we may ask you to bring this gear with you on race day.
If you would like to enjoy the trails/waterways after the race is finished, you are welcome to do so, but please keep in mind that we cannot secure your gear during the race.
- I can’t race due to an injury, can I volunteer?
Definitely! Let us know if you have any limitations due to your injury (e.g. need to be sitting, one arm is in a sling, etc.) so we can place you at an accommodating post.
- Can I volunteer and race on the same day? (Please note: race coupons for volunteering cannot be used on the same day.)
Yes. We usually start setting up check-in a couple hours before races begin and there are things to do post-race as well. Just make sure we know you’re racing so we can get you to the start line in time!
