Congratulations!! And a huge thanks to all 182 runners, 25 volunteers and the many wonderful fans that came out for EX2’s inaugural Off-Road Marathon & Half Marathon!!!
5:15 came pretty early for the crew, and the soaking rain was foreboding, but by the time registration started the sky was clearing and we were headed for perfect weather conditions. Trail conditions were a slightly different story. Mother Nature added challenge to the course with some wicked mud and slick rocks that kept everybody on their toes.
Alex Hetherington, of Stafford, VA continued his dominance of all things Prince William Forest Park as he finished first overall (and a full ten minutes ahead of the second place finisher) in the Half Marathon with a time of 1:36:16. Alex has also won the PWFP leg of the Backyard Burn series two years in a row.
Lauren Jefferson of Linville, VA was the first woman across the line, and eighth overall, in the Half Marathon. Her time of 1:54:10 was almost eight minutes faster than the next woman. Coincidentally, the top three male and female finishers in the Half were all from the 30-39 age groups proving it is nice to be 30 something.

John Anderson, of Vienna, VA rocked the Full Marathon course coming in first place with a time of 3:51:13. His 9-minute mile pace was followed closely behind by Boyds, MD native Steve Smith who finished second with a time of 3:57:13. Steve supervises the road construction project at the park and is responsible for the hay that made an otherwise impassable section of trail passable (if not somewhat challenging). Fairfax, VA’s Chris Ridgeway rounded out the top three overall with a time of 4:17:56.
Linda Poteate, of Falls Church, VA, was the first female finisher of the Full Marathon. Her time of 5:16:46 was just over a minute faster than second place female finisher Sandra Rodgers’ 5:17:59. Washingtonian Karen Krieg crossed the line in third place at 5:34:37, fifteen minutes ahead of the next place female racer. The top three women were 16th, 18th, and 24th overall.
We hope to see everybody at another first –the Rocky Gap Adventure Race on May 21st. This sprint race is about ½ the distance of VentureQuest, and will be an ideal “Welcome to Adventure Racing” for newbies! Check out the forum on the EX2 website if you need teammates and we’ll see you in a couple of weeks.
