EX2 Greenhorn Adventure Race

Thursday March 12, 2009
Beginner Course Added To The Rocky Gap AR!

Due to the overwhelming demand for our SOLD OUT Greenhorn Adventure Race, we just added a Beginner Course, to the Rocky Gap Adventure Race held on April 26, 2009. Beginner Course racers will compete alongside the Full Course racers, but on a shorter, less technical, and less physically demanding 12-16 mile course that will take 2-4 hours to complete. Similar to the Greenhorn AR, the Beginner Course of the RGAR is challenging yet highly achievable for the novice racer and full of surprises, decision making, and FUN!

So, if you went to sign up for the Greenhorn AR only to discover that it was sold out or if you are now on the Greenhorn waitlist, your wait is over! Now is your chance to experience the thrill and challenge of an adventure race that is suitable to the novice racer. Space is limited so get your team or two or three together and register today!

Welcome to Adventure Racing! The fourth annual Greenhorn AR was created to offer competitors a gateway into the sport of adventure racing. This 2-4 hour sprint adventure race was designed with the beginner in mind. While there is significant challenge built in, this event is fun and highly achievable for the novice racer. The navigation is straight forward, the trails are well marked, and the maps that we provide are excellent. The mountain biking takes racers over mostly non-technical fire roads and pavement but there are some semi-technical singletrack trails to provide an extra challenge. Finally, the paddling takes place on a clear and calm mountain lake.

Race Format. Teams of two or three will be tasked with finding 7-15 checkpoints dispersed throughout beautiful Rocky Gap State Park in Western Maryland. These checkpoints must be found on bike, foot, or in a canoe. The exact order and distance of each segment is kept a secret until race day but we can tell you that the course will include the most mileage of biking, followed by trail running, and then paddling (a canoe). There are also plenty of surprises, twists, and decision making in this race, all of which will cost or save your team time.

This event was SOLD OUT in 2007 and 2008 so save the date, call your friends, register, and get excited for a great day of adventure racing action. Are you up for the challenge?

Make it an Adventure Weekend at Rocky Gap! The Greenhorn AR will be the first of two races at Rocky Gap State Park on the weekend of April 25-26, 2009. The fifth annual Rocky Gap Adventure Race is a 3-6 hour intermediate adventure race that will take place on Sunday, April 26th. Here is an idea: how about you race in the Greenhorn AR on Saturday and then your spouse races in the Rocky Gap AR on Sunday? OR, how about racing on Saturday and then volunteering at the Rocky Gap AR on Sunday? Volunteering is a great way to learn what happens behind the scenes, always an excellent method of improving your knowledge.

About Rocky Gap State Park. Rocky Gap has tons to do and is just a 2.5 hour drive from the Washington and Baltimore metro areas. With camping, a Jack Nicklaus golf course, awesome beaches, plenty of trails, and fishing – your whole family will love it! Or you can make it a romantic getaway – there is a fancy lodge on site and plenty of bed and breakfasts located right in Cumberland.

Is the Greenhorn right for you?

The Greenhorn has been specifically designed for those without significant adventure racing experience. While we are not restricting registration, we ask that you please use the following as a barometer as to whether this competition is appropriate for you.

Register for the Greenhorn:

  • If you have never competed in an adventure race.
  • If it has been a while since you have competed in an adventure race and you are feeling out-of-practice or rusty.
  • If you are generally more of a ‘back of the pack’ adventure racer as opposed to a front runner.
  • If you are an experienced adventure racer who will register on a team with at least one other novice racer.

For those highly experienced racers that still want to participate, please come volunteer and help support new racers just getting into the sport.

If you are still unsure as to whether you should register for this event or if you have any other questions about the Greenhorn AR, please contact us.
