Team Pit Area: Each team may claim a pit area in the open fields near the timing tent and transition area. All pit areas will be first come, first served starting at 3pm on Friday 10/2/09. We will reserve space closest to the timing tent for solo racers to set up their pit areas. There is plenty of space so we will not be measuring out pit areas. We do, however, ask that you be courteous and take no more than 20'x20' of space per team. Your team may position tents, tables, etc in your pit area starting at 3pm on Friday 10/2/09. On both Fri 10/2 and Sat 10/3, racers will be permitted to camp in their pit area ($10/site/night - pay at check-in). Vehicles are NOT permitted on the grassy pit area. All equipment must be carried from the parking lot, which is very close.
E-punch Timing System: An e-punch timing system will be used in this event. After every lap, the racer who just completed their lap will be required to e-punch using a small electronic key. When inserted into the e-punch box, this e-punch key downloads your lap time based on the last time your entered the e-punch key it into the system. With this information, our software is able to track lap counts and split times. A manual timing system will also be used as a backup. A demonstration of the system will be provided at check-in.
Log-in/Epunch Transfer Procedure: After completing each lap, the finishing racer must go directly to the appropriate numbered table and hand over their e-punch key to the log-in volunteer. The log-in volunteer will manually record the time, e-punch, and then hand the on-deck racer their e-punch key. The on-deck racer will now be active and may begin their lap. To speed the transition, the on-deck racer should check-in with the appropriate log-in volunteer before their teammate finishes their lap. Times for the next lap begin when the finishing racer e-punches. E-punching is only required once after each lap. In other words, it is not required for the next racer to e-punch at the beginning of their lap. ALL RACERS must have their e-punch at all times when racing. Loss of an e-punch will result in a 5 minute team penalty (added to the final time for that team). Teams must also purchase a new e-punch for $40 before beginning their next lap. If your team finds your e-punch key at a later time, the $40 will be returned but the 5 minute penalty will stand.
Starting Procedure (9 Hrs of Duathlon and 3 Hrs of Trail Running): Each 9 Hrs of Duathlon and 3 Hrs of Trail Running racer starting the first lap of the trail running segment of the race must log in at the timing tent between 8:15am-8:45am. They will receive their team e-punch key at this time. Trail running segment racers should assemble at 8:50am for a mass start.
The Finish (3 Hrs of Trail Running): 3 Hrs of Trail Running racers must start their last lap no later than 11:45am on race day. Each team’s place is determined by the number of laps completed and the sequential order of finish within the team’s last lap. For instance, a team with 3 laps that finishes at 11:58am will beat a team with 3 laps that finishes at 12:02pm and a team with 4 laps that finishes at 12:30pm will have beaten all teams with 3 laps of fewer.
9 Hrs of Duathlon Transition from Trail Running to Mountain Biking: 9 Hrs of Duathlon racers will transition to mountain biking starting at 11:45am and will not be permitted to start another trail running lap after 11:45am. All laps (regardless if they are mountain biking laps or trail running laps) will be treated equally, as one lap. Given the timing of their laps, some 9 Hrs of Duathlon racers who arrive before the 11:45am cut-off time may opt to wait until 11:45am to start their next lap, which will be a mountain biking lap.
Starting Procedure (6 Hrs of Mountain Biking Race): Each 6 Hrs of Mountain Biking racer starting the first lap must log in at the timing tent between 11:00am-11:30am. They will receive their team e-punch key at this time. Starting at 11:00am, Lap 1 mountain bike racers should pre-position their bikes in the bike staging area. We will use a LeMans style start, where all lap 1 racers will run approximately 400 yards before getting on their bikes. The 6 hours of mountain biking race will begin at 12pm sharp.
The Finish (9 Hrs of Duathlon and 6 Hrs of Mountain Biking): Mountain biker racers must start their final lap by 5:30pm on race day. Each team’s place is determined by the number of laps completed and the sequential order of finish within the team’s last lap. 9 Hrs of Duathlon racers will add all trail running and mountain biking laps together and they will treated equally.
Posting Of Standings/Results: Standing/Results will be posted between 10:30am-11:30am and then subsequently at hour intervals.
Race numbers: Each 9 Hrs of Duathlon and 6 Hrs of Mountain Biking racer will receive a bike number and a bib number. 3 Hours of Trail Running racers will receive a bib number only. Race numbers must be unobstructed and completely visible at all times while racing. Bike numbers must be affixed to the front of your handlebars and bib numbers should be attached to the back of your jersey or on your hydration system (if using one) for the mountain biking segment and on the front duing the trail running segment.
Team captains: Team captains will represent the team in all official communication before, during, and after the event.
Pre-race brief: All 9 Hrs of Duathlon and 3 Hrs of Trail Running team captains must attend the pre-race brief from 8:00am-8:15am on race day. All 6 Hrs of Mountain Biking team captains must attend their pre-race brief from 10:45am-11:00am on race day. All racers are welcome to attend the briefs, however.
Transition Area: At all times, racers must dismount and walk/run their bikes through the timing tent and transition area.
Support on the course: Any registered racer may supply support on the course to any other registered racer. Supporting racers must access the course on foot or on bike only. Supporting racers may take any gear or tools with them. Bikes may be switched out.
Water and food: Water and food may be supplied to racers by anyone, anywhere on the course. Racers and support crew should stay clear of the course when accepting water and food. Please respect the trail system. DO NOT LITTER. Racers caught littering by EX2 staff will receive a time penalty.
Aid stations: Aid stations will be positioned on the course. The aid stations will be stocked with water and Gatorade. First aid kits and emergency communications will also be available at each aid station.
Mountain Bikes: Cyclocross bikes are not permitted in this race. Bikes will not be inspected by race officials for mechanical worthiness. Racers with broken or disabled bikes may continue the race. Please yield to all riders if needing to walk your bike. Racers may use more than one bike in this event and racers may receive help with mechanical difficulties from any source in between laps (see on ‘support on the course’ rule).
Helmets: CPSC, ANSI, or SNELL certified bicycling helmets must be worn and buckled at ALL times while on a bike.
Permitted course riders: Only registered racers, event staff, and permitted media may ride or run on the designated course during the event. Spectators may not ride or run on the course. A map and directions with good spectator viewing spots will be provided in the race packet.
Drafting: Racers may draft any other registered racers only. Drafting vehicles or non-registered riders is not permitted.
Right of way: Riding racers have right of way over racers walking, pushing, or carrying their bikes. Walking racers should use the least rideable portion of the trail when being passed.
Passing: Passing riders should vocalize when overtaking another rider with commands such as ‘passing on your left’ or ‘passing on your right’. The passing racer is responsible for passing safely. When vying for position the leading racer does not necessarily have to yield to the challenging racer. A racer may not, however, bodily interfere with the intent to impede the progress of the challenging racer.
Short-cutting: Follow all course marking. Short cutting the course is grounds for team disqualification.
Course Alterations: EX2 reserves the right to alter the course at any time before or duing the event. For no reason shall a participant or anyone other than an EX2 staff member make alterations to the course.
Sportsmanship: Abusive or profane language toward other racers, volunteers, or race officials or foul riding will not be tolerated. Unsportsmanlike conduct is grounds for penalties or team disqualification and will be dealt with on a case by case basis by the race director. Please exercise good sportsmanship.
Protests: Protests may be submitted by the team captain to the race director at any time during the event. Protests will not be accepted after the event. Protests must be in writing and include any information that will support the protest such as a description of the incident, names and contact info of witnesses, etc. A $30 fee shall be submitted, in cash, with the protest. The race director will investigate and rule on the protest. The fee will be forfeited to EX2 if the protest is denied or refunded if the protest is upheld. The decision of the race director is final.
Minimum laps: Each racer on a team must complete at least one lap. Example scenario: A two person 9 Hrs of Duathlon team may have one teammates complete one trail running lap and the other teammate complete all other trail running and mountain biking laps.
Consecutive laps: A racer may ride or run consecutive laps but must log-in after each lap.
Canceling a lap: Once on the course, a racer must complete his or her lap. However, the team has the option of canceling a racer’s lap and restarting the lap from the timing tent with another racer from that team. Teams should only choose to exercise this option if the racer currently on course in unable to finish their lap (such as an injury). Any team member can cancel a lap by notifying the timing tent and signing that they are canceling the lap. If a team cancels a racer’s lap and is restarting with a new racer, a epunch will be issued without penalty and the new racer inherits the log-in time of the canceling racer’s lap. The epunch from the canceled lap racer must be returned to the timing tent before an official time is provided for that team. Once a cancellation has been made, it cannot be rescinded and the canceled lap does not count as a completed lap.
Severe Weather: In the case of severe weather or another extenuating circumstance the prevents the ongoing scoring of the event or creates a racing environment that is deemed too dangerous for the participants, volunteers, or event staff, the race director may call the race as of a certain time. Final results will be calculated based on each team's placement at the call time as determined by that team's last completed lap. This rule is intended to be exercised as a last resort when no other means is available to continue scoring the event or when the potential for serious harm or loss of life becomes imminent.
EMS ghost rider/runner: In the event that a racer stops to help a seriously injured racer which requires EMS response, ghost rider/runner procedures will be implemented. The EMS personnel will radio to the timing tent the name and number of the assisting racer. Race officials will then inform the team of the assisting racer to prepare for the next rider on their team. That rider will be allowed to start his/her lap based on the assisting racer’s ‘ghost rider’ lap time which will be based on the fastest of either the assisting racers average lap time or the team’s average lap time, whichever is faster.
