The third annual Bushwhacker Adventure Running Race amps up the adventure factor of a trail run by adding navigation as a component of the event. The format is simple: racers choose their route to the finish as they run/navigate approximately 10 miles from Hemlock to Fountainhead. The three format rules require racers to travel on foot, stay within park property, and visit 3 checkpoints/aid stations along the way, all of which are located on the Bull-Run Occoquan Trail, a major path connecting the start and finish. Many racers follow this well traveled trail the entire way but some choose to shave time/mileage by going off-trail using a map that EX2 provides. What will you do? Are you ready for the adventure?
Hemlock Overlook and Fountainhead Regional Parks are located along the banks of the historic Bull Run and Occoquan Reservoir. These parks have some of the most beautiful and remote feeling terrain in Fairfax County, Virginia, only 30 minutes outside of Washington D.C. Sightings of deer, beaver, turkey, osprey and great blue heron are not uncommon. The Bull Run-Occoquan trail extends over rolling wooded terrain from Bull Run Regional Park in the north to Fountainhead Regional Park in the south.
