The fourth Bushwhacker amps up the adventure factor of a trail run by adding navigation as a component of the event. The race format is simple: racers choose their route to the finish as they run/navigate their way approximately 20K (10K out and 10K back) along a beautiful linear park corridor. Most racers will follow a well-traveled and well-marked trail the entire way but some will choose to shave time/mileage by going off-trail using a map that EX2 provides.
The Bushwhacker Adventure Running Race is an out and back event where solo racers and 2 person relay teams will travel on foot from Fountainhead to Bull Run Marina and then back to Fountainhead. Solo racers will complete both 10K segments, totalling appoximately 20K. Two person relay teams will complete one 10K segment each, one from Fountainhead to Bull Run Marina and the other from Bull Run Marina to Fountainhead. Relay teams will shuttle their vehicle and hand off the keys at Bull Run Marina. Racers must stay within park property and visit two (2) checkpoints/aid station per segment. The checkpoints will be located on the Bull Run-Occoquan trail, a well-marked trail which connects Fountainhead and Bull Run Marina.
Both of these parks are located along the banks of the historic Bull Run and Occoquan Reservoir and they have some of the most beautiful and remote feeling terrain in Fairfax County, Virginia, only 30 minutes outside of Washington D.C. Sightings of deer, beaver, turkey, osprey and great blue heron are not uncommon.
