Cranky Monkey Courses, Pre-Rides, and Pay Dirt!

The 11th running of the Cranky Monkey Mountain Bike Series is upon us.  Here are some updates:

- Fountainhead Rescheduled:  Mother Nature unleased a very untimely 2 hour rain this past Sunday at Fountainhead, requiring us to postpone the start of the series.  The rain date is Saturday, Aug 23rd and will now be the series finale.  All pre-registered racers were offered a full credit or a full refund and registration was re-opened.  Sign up today!

- Rosaryville Course:  The Rosaryville race on August 9th will now kick-off the series.  This 11 mile course includes the 9 mile perimeter trail and the 2 mile interior trail, run in a clockwise direction.  This course is super-fast and super-fun and includes twisty single-track and very few hills.  Pre-ride whenever you like following the course map. Here’s a link to the current start list.

- Quantico Pre-Rides:  I rode the challenging trails at Quantico this morning and they are in AWESOME shape - kudos to John-Paul Cooley, Jim Long, and the Marines at Quantico for taking such great care of these trails.  Here is a link to the course map.  Riding on the incredible trails at Quantico is special because civilian access is ONLY permitted on race day and on official pre-ride dates.  The pre-rides are scheduled for Sat, Aug 2nd at 9am and Sun, Aug 10th at 9am.  Enjoy the ride!  Here’s a link for details

- Pay-dirt Day:  Help maintain the trails and earn 5 CM series points at the same time.  Volunteer at the MORE Cranky Monkey pay-dirt trail maintenance day on 8/2 at Rosaryville.  Pay-dirt points could be just enough to push you into an award!

Cranky Monkey craziness is about to being.  Come along for the ride!

XTERRA EX2 Racers Tackle Challenging Rocky Gap!

Gorgeous Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, MD once again played host this past Sunday to the 11th annual XTERRA EX2 Off-Road Triathlon and Duathlon.  The weather was sunny and warm and the vibe was festive as close to 300 athletes tested themselves on a fun and challenging course which included a .75 mile swim in a clear mountain lake, a 14 mile semi-technical mountain biking segment, and a heart pounding 5 mile trail run.  Duathletes followed the same course except they began the race with a 3 mile trail run instead of the swim.

Congratulations to all athletes for taking on the challenge of Rocky Gap and thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors, and park managers for making this event a huge success.  It was a great day of XTERRA action!

Results are now posted.  Photos are coming soon.

Fun, Fun, Fun at the 12 Hrs of Cranky Monkey!

Cloudy skies and intermittent rain showers made for a challenging test of skill and determination this past Saturday at the eighth annual 12 Hours of Cranky Monkey Mountain Bike Relay Race.  Held on the fun and flowing trails of the Schaeffer Farms Trail System in Germantown, MD, solo racers and teams of two and three battled to see who could complete the most 9.3 mile laps in a 12 hour period, from 8am-8pm.  There was also a 3 hour solo option from 8:30am-11:30am. It was an awesome day of mountain biking action!

Thanks to all the racers, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators for making it a great day.  A special thanks goes out to MORE members Dave Magill, Bob Caverly, Rick Meyer, and Chris Dobroth for spending 66 hours of volunteer effort to get the trails ‘race ready’!   Also, thank you to Dave Powell from the MD DNR for his continued support of our events.  Finally, thank you to Tony Cohen and Steve Gullick from the Button Farm Living History Center.  They permitted us to use their property for the staging and pit areas and were super supportive from day one.

Results are now posted.  Photos are now posted.

GREAT NEWS about the 12 Hrs of Cranky Monkey!

We are thrilled to announce that we have just secured permission to use a privately managed farm that borders Schaeffer Farms for our staging and pit area of the 12 Hrs of Cranky Monkey Mountain Bike Relay Race coming up on Sat, June 21st.  So, instead of staging out of the Germantown Soccer Complex our new home will be the Button Farm Living History Center off Black Rock Rd.
